ATLANTA — Sionic Mobile, a cloud-based connected commerce provider, today announced it has expanded its Advisory Board with the addition of three new members: veteran airline and travel executive, Jeff Potter; payments entrepreneur, Linda Rossetti and global electronic payments innovator, Joe Cohane.

Potter, founder and CEO of Beskapes, brings more than 30 years of experience in the travel and transportation industry including the former CEO of Frontier Airlines, CEO of Surf Air, CEO of Exclusive Resorts, and various positions with McDonnell Douglas Corporation, Pacific Southwest Airlines, Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Under his leadership, Frontier Airlines emerged as one of America’s most successful low-cost carriers.

Rossetti, founder and president of Bluestone Payments, is a well-known payments expert, consulting with payments companies and the investment community on numerous strategic opportunities. Prior to establishing Bluestone, she served as the president of third party relationships and the senior vice president of strategic initiatives for Global Payments (NYSE: GPN) and was a founding executive of NOVA (now Elavon). Throughout her payments career, Rossetti has held various sales and management roles, building organizations to create strategic partnerships with clients including financial institutions, national merchants, independent sales organizations and integrated payments providers.

Cohane, partner at Relevant Payment Consulting, brings more than 32 years of international experience in the Electronic Payment Industry with unique knowledge of both the card issuing and merchant acquiring business lines. He played a key role in the development of three successful start-up companies creating valuations in excess of $2.5 billion and was the founder of Veracity Payment Solutions (Vanco) which was recognized as one of the top 50 merchant acquiring companies in North America. Additionally, he has held senior management positions in global processing firms including Citibank, Global Payments, Elavon, U.S. Bancorp and Vanco Payment Solutions.

“Having a strong and engaged advisory board is paramount to Sionic Mobile’s continued growth,” Herman explained. “Jeff’s proven success in the airline industry will be invaluable, as we expand even further into the hospitality and travel industry. And, of course, payments continue to have a vital role in the evolution of Sionic Mobile’s connected commerce platform. Having the unique industry insight and expertise of two widely respected payments executives like Linda and Joe positions the company for explosive growth and ensures we continue to develop and deploy technology that disrupts the current market. I am proud to welcome our newest Advisory Board members and look forward to working with each of them in the coming weeks and months.”

Potter, Rossetti and Cohane will be advising Sionic Mobile Board members Ronald Herman; William E. Clift (retired), CTO, Cingular Wireless; Bill Lamar, CMO (retired), McDonald’s USA; Robert G. Hisaoka, principal, RRR LLC and Patrick Gahan, principal, Alder Asset Management and co-founder Enduring Hearts.

GM Lets Customers Order Their Morning Coffee With Their Car

DETROIT — Starting today, General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) is rolling out the automotive industry’s first commerce platform for on-demand reservations and purchases of goods and services. With Marketplace, drivers can now order and pay for their favorite coffee — and much more — on the way to work with a simple tap on the dash.

Marketplace allows customers to order food, find the closest gas station to save on fuel, and make dinner reservations on the go. This means Marketplace gives drivers of eligible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles the opportunity to more safely interact with a growing number of their favorite brands in retail, fuel, hospitality, food, hotel and transportation through the in-vehicle touchscreen.

Marketplace also features a “Shop” section dedicated to offers specific to GM vehicles, for instance purchasing Wi-Fi data, discounts for an oil change or deals on GM accessories. Simple on-screen notifications can identify relevant offers.

“The average American spends 46 minutes per day on the road driving[1]. Leveraging connectivity and our unique data capabilities, we have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back,” said Santiago Chamorro, vice president for Global Connected Customer Experience, GM. “Marketplace is the first of a suite of new personalization features that we will roll out over the next 12 to 18 months to nearly four million U.S. drivers.”

Leveraging the embedded 4G LTE connectivity, GM is adding Marketplace to millions of existing 2017 and 2018 model-year cars, trucks and crossovers that have compatible infotainment systems, with continued rollout to compatible new vehicles. A separate data plan is not required to use Marketplace.

“For most retailers and consumer brands the daily commute is the only time not accessible in a consumers’ day,” said Chamorro. “Marketplace gives merchants the ability to more safely engage with drivers and passengers in a meaningful way that provides true value for our customers.”

Marketplace is designed to be used while driving. It leverages machine learning from real-time interaction data, such as location, time of day and a driver’s established digital relationship with third-party merchants, to offer highly personalized experiences.

Adhering to industry distracted driving guidelines, as well as GM’s strict in-house safety guiding principles, GM designs its in-vehicle systems to minimize manual interactions, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

The first brands accessible through Marketplace include:

  • GM lets customers buy 4G LTE Data packages, extend their OnStar subscription or receive offers for certified service, parts and accessories for their specific vehicle.
  • Starbucks offers another convenient way for customers to order ahead and enjoy their favorite handcrafted beverage or food item. And as part of the Starbucks Rewards™ program, members enjoy more value by earning Rewards towards free food and drink. (Early 2018)
  • Dunkin’ Donuts will help customers start their day off right through an experience that allows DD Perks members to preorder and pay onscreen for their favorite coffee and donut, at their preferred pickup location.
  • Wingstop will allow you to skip the wait by re-ordering your favorites and paying ahead, so you can get home in time for the big game
  • TGI Fridays will let customers schedule a table reservation for them and their closest friends and family when they need a break from the week.
  • Shell will enable the exceptional driver experience, providing ease of payment and savings with INSTANT GOLD STATUS in the Fuel Rewards® program. Customers’ closest Shell station will be identified and station amenities showcased among the largest fuel station network in the U.S., with the ability to pay in-dash coming soon.
  • ExxonMobil will quickly locate Exxon and Mobil fuel stations with details of what they offer, route you there and get you back on the road faster.
  • Priceline.com gives drivers access to hundreds of thousands of hotels and exclusive hotel savings on the go.
  • Parkopedia allows drivers to find, reserve and pay for parking, all at the click of a button.
  • Applebee’s ensures customers are never too far from Eatin’ Good in the Neighborhood whether close to home or miles away with the ability to locate their nearest restaurant, order featured menu items and reorder recent favorites through the convenience of their vehicle’s touchscreen.
  • IHOP makes it easy for guests to enjoy hot, fresh all-day breakfast favorites like fluffy buttermilk pancakes on the go, thanks to safe and secure on-dash ordering and location service capabilities that help search and find the nearest restaurant for pickup.
  • delivery.com empowers the neighborhood economy by enabling customers to order online from their favorite local restaurants, wine and spirits shops, grocery stores and laundry and dry-cleaning providers.

To allow merchants to efficiently and quickly integrate their content as part of the in-vehicle Marketplace ecosystem, General Motors is working with three main platform partners: Xevo (www.xevo.com) in Seattle, Washington; Conversable (www.conversable.com) in Austin, Texas; and Sionic Mobile (www.sionicmobile.com) in Atlanta, Georgia. Merchants interested in Marketplace can contact the above platform partners or email GM at Marketplace@onstar.com.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) has leadership positions in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, and Wuling brands. ATLANTA — Sionic Mobile, a cloud-based connected commerce provider, today announced it has partnered with NorthOut, Inc., a leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technology experiences firm, to enhance its ION Commerce Engine® (ICE) platform with advanced analytics and data-driven dashboards powered by IBM Watson Analytics. Incorporating actionable data including customer spending traits, loyalty, transaction trends and market demographic data, the latest version of the platform will help merchants better engage and connect with millions of consumers through their vehicle dashboards and their favorite mobile apps.

Featuring next-generation AI features and capabilities, the latest release of the ICE platform (available Q1 2018) will provide retailers the tools needed to accelerate business growth, drive organizational efficiency, create better outcomes and deepen customer relationships.

“Retailers and merchants in today’s market are facing fierce competition and for many, especially small businesses, the struggle to simply survive, much less thrive is daunting,” said Eric Healy, CEO, NorthOut. “Most business owners recognize the transformative power of artificial intelligence, but lack the necessary resources or expertise to successfully leverage the technology. Sionic Mobile’s sophisticated, connected commerce engine will disrupt this industry, providing not only a robust mobile payments and loyalty platform, but now also featuring data-driven components providing a clear market advantage.”

Sionic Mobile’s dynamic platform, ICE, powers connected cars, the Mobile Rewards MarketplaceⓇ ,the ION RewardsⓇ consumer app, and is integrated with popular payment terminals and POS systems.

It leverages Sionic Mobile’s proprietary three-digit code checkout process, enabling merchants to accept mobile payments in a matter of minutes with no upfront costs, complex integrations or expensive technology upgrades.

“NorthOut’s unique blend of strategy, modern experience design and cognitive computing skills will be instrumental in taking our ICE platform to the next level,” said Ronald Herman, CEO of Sionic Mobile. “Working with their team, we’ve taken a very complex set of features and delivered them in an intuitive, automated manner that positions any merchant, regardless of size or location, to succeed. Despite the continued hype, most of the platforms touting AI capabilities provide little to no value, providing users with cryptic, often inaccessible data. The enhancements we’ve made to ICE will be a game changer for retailers.”

Sionic Mobile’s Coud-Based Technology Powers the Loyalty and Mobile Payment Apps Used by Millions of Consumers

Consumers and retailers in ever-increasing numbers look to smartphones to make shopping and marketing even easier. Developing and maintaining the apps that make these experiences so convenient, however, takes a great deal of knowledge and commitment.

Sionic Mobile works tirelessly to perfect the technology that many of its users might take for granted. Established in 2010, the company initially launched its mobile reward app engine – the ION Commerce Engine™ (ICE) – in shops and restaurants in 42 U.S. airports. After learning that the apps powered by the ICE were not being used or adopted in the way that it had hoped, the company sought to improve the technology.

“We initially underestimated what it took for the people behind the counter to process a mobile reward,” says Ronald Herman, CEO of the Atlanta-based company. “We regrouped and told ourselves that we had to make that part of the process better.”

“Over the past six years, we’ve gone to the marketplace and tested our various components to see how they’ve worked, including testing behavior behind the counter with merchant staff. We believe we have perfected that,” he adds. “Then we tested our mobile payment platform and improved our fraud-detection system. We have a low-cost, quick-to-market way to test the functionality of our platform.”

Important Partners
The cloud-based mobile commerce company develops and provides loyalty applications for major corporations including General Motors, which uses ICE within its MyBuick, MyChevrolet, MyCadillac and MyGMC apps. Each of those apps includes the OnStar AtYourService platform, which offers special offers and rewards to customers. “That’s where our content lives,” Herman says.

The company also provides mobile pay apps to merchants. Sionic Mobile partners with JP Morgan Chase to process payments made through these apps. These include payments made through Visa cards, as the bank is one of the largest issuers of Visa in the nation.

In addition to powering apps offered by car brands, hotels, airlines, retailers and others, Sionic Mobile’s ICE system can be found within its own apps. The ION Rewards app, targeted to consumers, offers rewards points for goods from many national businesses. Mobile Rewards Marketplace (MRM), is a web and mobile app offered to businesses. Both apps are available for iOS and Android phones.

Sionic Mobile’s in-house development team writes the code for its mobile apps as well as for the ICE platform. One of the company’s contracted partners, The Websuasion Group LLC, developed and provides coding for Sionic Mobile’s website, web-based apps and MRM web portals. Sionic Mobile, its merchants and other partners use the portals to track transaction and customer information.

“Our web portals are an integral part of our solution; they allow users to see everything that’s happening on our apps in real time,” Herman says. “The Websuasion Group has done a good job of making our web apps accessible from all devices.”

Ongoing Investments
Sionic Mobile is now in what Herman describes as an “extreme growth mode” as a result of many new users its partners are bringing to its Marketplace. The company is increasing the number of merchant locations in which its apps are used from 108,000 to 2.2 million nationwide. “In the next 15 to 18 months we expect, between all of our mobile app partners, to have more than 200 million apps already present on users’ first or second screen,” he says.

To handle this new traffic, Sionic Mobile is working closely with Chase to ensure payments are processed effectively as well as investing heavily in cloud storage. The company’s platform resides in Amazon’s cloud and is supported by servers located regionally for fail-safe and redundancy.

Sionic Mobile is also investing heavily in its proprietary GeoSense® iBeacon network. The company is equipping all of its merchant locations with iBeacons, which support push notifications to apps equipped with its beacon listening code. These notifications include welcome messages as well as one-tap mobile checkouts, both of which drive more frequent app use. “We’re expecting, by this time next year, to have more beacons in more places than anyone else,” Herman says.

“We are pleased to partner with Sionic Mobile to provide the underbanked with a universal, user-friendly rewards program,” said Max Haynes, CEO of Customer Engagement Technologies. “The underbanked are also under-rewarded and until now there really haven’t been any mobile loyalty or incentive programs. The Mobile Rewards Marketplace is unique in that there are no cumbersome requirements and restrictions on when and how the rewards can be used, no expiration dates and most importantly, users can earn and spend rewards at any of the retail locations in the Marketplace, nationwide. Like Sionic Mobile, we designed PaySwag with the user experience first and foremost and integrating with the Marketplace boosts the value we are able to offer app users.”

PaySwag is integrated with more than 17,000 retail locations accepting cash payments for debts such as auto payments, medical bills and government fines. By combining mobile access and alternative payment technology, the CET platform gives people the tools they need to make on-time payments and rewards them for doing so. Using mobile gamification to transform how the underbanked interact with lenders, municipalities and healthcare, PaySwag makes payments more accessible, rewarding, consistent and likely.

“Our Mobile Rewards Marketplace is simple in design making it easy to navigate, but built on proven technology, delivering powerful results,” said Ron Herman, CEO of Sionic Mobile. “By providing instant rewards to app users, the Marketplace helps drive adoption and usage of apps like PaySwag, better engages current customers and helps attract new users. We are pleased to work with the Customer Engagement Technologies team to fill a void in the market by offering a feature-rich rewards program to a large and typically underserved market.”

  • Sionic Mobile’s Ronald Herman joins us on the podcast this week.

Loyalty and mobile commerce: two sides of the same coin
We actually define mobile commerce a little differently than the rest of the market does. We tie rewards and customer rewards to the amount spent inside a shop, restaurant, and service place. But we also bundle that with advertising, special offers, and soon, with digital couponing that’s personalized down to the location of the mobile device. Very big retailers have very loyal and enthusiastic customers but for secondary tier and SMBs that can’t afford a big loyalty program, we can help augment their operations through our loyalty marketplace.

The difference between enterprise retail and SMBs

We started Sionic Mobile six years ago with the same chicken and egg scenario most entrepreneurs face: how do we get users onto a platform without inventory? For us, inventory is the ability to pay with your phone and collect rewards. We decided to go down the e-gift card rail. Our backend actually goes out and buys a digital gift card for the exact amount of purchase, presents it on the phone at the point of sale, and then turn around and credit rewards to the customer. Our whole goal is to create a big, rich marketplace where you can use an existing app on your device, accrue points, and spend them at any of the partners on the marketplace. No need to carry 27 loyalty punchcards.

It’s been really successful but as we get larger partners on the network, it’s a very costly proposition for companies like Staples and Lowes. So, now we still manage the payment but we integrate it through the payment terminals like Ingenico and Verifone or directly into large retailers’ POS systems. This way we cut out the expensive e-gift card rail which wasn’t developed for this purpose.

What’s coming down the pike for mobile commerce and loyalty.
My very first company back in ’92 used artificial intelligence to convert hand printed information into digital. I have AI in my blood. Recently, my friends at GM coined the term “cognitive commerce.” Cars are smart, know if you’re low on fuel, what the weather’s late and the last time it was servcies. IBM Watson will analyze these car habits, along with driving habits and soon, shopping habits. The dashboard and infotainment buttons will change based on what the car believes you’d be interested along the roof.

What happens when passengers leave the vehicle? You’re kind of in a black hole. What we’re doing, with the same IBM Watson backend, picks up where you leave the vehicle and takes customers round trip through the IBM cognitive commerce engine. You’ll have a much better dining and shopping experience based on the history of your habits.

ATLANTA–Sionic Mobile today announced the launch of a fully digital, Mobile Rewards Marketplace for small-to-medium sized business merchants (SMBs) and large chain retailers. Available early February, the Marketplace for SMBs is powered by the company’s award-winning ION Commerce Engine™ (ICE) and features speedy sign up, low-cost, bulk-rate mobile payments, merchant controlled rewards and untethered reach to millions of big-brand Mobile Rewards App consumers.

There are no upfront costs, complex integrations or expensive technology upgrades required to join the Marketplace. The Mobile Rewards Marketplace, a cloud-based web and mobile app solution, works alongside existing point of sale (POS) systems and standalone rewards programs.

The new Marketplace for enterprise retailers features automated data analysis and data-driven dashboards powered by IBM Watson Analytics, enabling Mobile Rewards App partners and enterprise retailers, who are integrated with Sionic Mobile’s ICE platform, to better engage and connect with mobile consumers. These analytics provide powerful insights related to customers’ spending traits across the entire Marketplace, and in turn, allows enterprise retailers to dynamically adjust rewards and deliver individualized offers using simple business rules.

“The Mobile Rewards Marketplace is a game changer for both SMB and large retail merchants,” said Ronald Herman, CEO and founder of Sionic Mobile. “We’re not aware of any other mobile payments and rewards offering that allows SMB owners to go mobile in five minutes or less, with no upfront cost or monthly fees, and immediately reach nearby Mobile Rewards App users. Likewise, our combined iBeacon-enabled ICE platform and Mobile Rewards Marketplace – an industry first – uniquely addresses in-store mobile payments and rewards for both retailer-branded mobile apps and the broader Marketplace cooperative, optimizing distinctly different use cases with a single integration.”

For SMB merchant members of the Mobile Rewards Marketplace, sales are entered as usual. Owners or staff use the free Marketplace mobile app to accept mobile-to-mobile payments using a QR Code or 3-digit code from the customer’s phone. That’s it. Immediately following a successful mobile checkout, customers receive instant rewards (points, miles, etc.) in their Mobile Rewards App. SMBs pay ONLY when accepting a mobile-to-mobile payment – 1% success fee, low card payment fee, and whatever reward they choose to give their mobile customers – typically 2% to 10% of checkout amounts.

Sionic Mobile’s ICE platform combines an extensive GeoSense® iBeacon network with important market insights, enabling custom greetings to consumers that drive awareness and generate more frequent app usage at businesses in the Marketplace. Additionally, the platform is integrated with popular payment terminals and POS systems for enterprise clients, supports mobile payments from most any iOS or Android device and any bank-issued credit or debit card. ICE payments are safe, secure and processed by J.P. Morgan Chase.

Airports send a clear signal to Bluetooth beacons

Bluetooth beacons, which communicate with consumers’ apps as they enter and leave stores, have been bouncing around the retail industry for a few years looking for the right combination of foot traffic, product and customer experience.

Airports, which combine all three of those factors, are a particularly good spot for the technology, says Sionic Mobile CEO Ronald Herman.

“In the travel sector the volume is important, and the biggest issue is speed,” Herman said, noting that at one of the Popeye’s locations in Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport there’s a line “no matter how many cashiers are behind the counter.”

The Atlanta-based Sionic is testing its new beacon deployment at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which usually trades back and forth with Chicago’s O’Hare Airport as the world’s busiest. Sionic is pairing Apple iBeacons with its Sionic ION Loyalty app and the Oracle Micros/ION Commerce Engine point of sale system in an attempt to speed check in, loyalty rewards, ordering and payments at a group of Mack II eateries in the Atlanta airport.

Mack II operates Famous Famiglia Pizzeria, Baja Fresh Mexican, Phillips Seafood, Atlanta Bread, We Juice It and Popeye’s Chicken locations at the airport. The three initial restaurants are the pizza chain, Atlanta Bread Company and Phillips Seafood, a mix of a ‘grab and go,’ buffet bar and sit down restaurant, giving Sionic a view of beacon performance at a variety of restaurant types.

The other Atlanta airport restaurant locations will come on board early in 2017 and Sionic plans to deploy the in 73 other airports where it does business. Sionic will also collaborate with other apps, such as GM OnStar and other partners that it will announce in the near term, Herman said, adding Sionic will stick with travel-related use cases because of the mix of volume and the need for fast transactions.

Sionic’s goal is to go from a push notification when a consumer enters the store, a welcome message, offers and the “go to pay” button with Sionic’s three digit transaction code in about a minute. “There’s no card to hand over and the phone doesn’t leave the owner’s hands,” Herman said. “It’s all done through the cloud.”

Retailers and payment companies have used beacons for years, taking advantage of the technology’s ability to pair a user’s’ smartphone location to a store for uses ranging from location based marketing to bank-retailer partnerships, but have run into challenges because of issues such as store design.

There are also other potential uses for beacon technology at airports that make them an interesting deployment choice, according to Tim Sloane, vice president of payments innovation and director of the emerging technologies advisory service at Mercator. Airports have been the focus of other mobile payment initiatives, partly because of the airline’s use of mobile apps to help travelers navigate to their plane and retrieve boarding passes. “If the airline has a secure mobile app it could utilize the app and [Bluetooth Low Energy] to recognize the individual at the gate, to notify the individual to come to the counter if required and accept the boarding pass as the person enters the gate,” Sloane said. “It would be particularly interesting if airports and airlines worked together to define an architecture and interoperability.”

The timing is right for a major beacon deployment because of what Herman sees as a frustration with chip card payments—a large part of Sionic’s pitch is its ability to use a mobile app to bypass a traditional point of sale. “The EMV dip takes far too long and it leave lines,” he said.

The buzz surrounding Amazon’s new “no cashier” store also helps, according to Herman. “We believe that in the near future, and I’m talking within the next six months, there will be pilot tests out there for stores similar to Amazon,” he said.

Sionic Mobile Supercharges Its ION Commerce Engine With IBM Watson Analytics

ATLANTA–Sionic Mobile today announced its award-winning ION Commerce Engine (ICE) now features automated data analysis and data-driven dashboards powered by IBM Watson Analytics, enabling partners and retailers to better engage and connect with millions of Mobile Rewards App users nationwide.

Sionic Mobile’s ICE mobile payments and loyalty platform combines an extensive GeoSenseⓇ beacon network with powerful market insights, enabling merchants to develop highly effective mobile marketing and loyalty campaigns to drive awareness and generate more frequent app usage. The new analytics component provides actionable data in a user-friendly environment helping businesses identify customer spending traits, loyalty and transaction trends, as well as market and demographic data.

“We’re providing retailers a robust, intuitive mobile commerce platform without the complexities normally associated with this level of analytics,” said Ronald Herman, CEO and founder of Sionic Mobile. “Other platforms in the market tout AI capabilities, promising retailers a wealth of data to drive sales and boost revenue. In reality, most retailers lack the resources required to perform intricate analysis of often cryptic, inaccessible data, and instead of artificial intelligence, are left with artificial ignorance. Incorporating IBM Watson Analytics with our proven loyalty and payments commerce engine will be a game changer for retailers that will not only amplify customer engagment and the overall user experience, but will provide a significant edge in a crowded mobile marketplace.”

Sionic Mobile’s ICE platform is integrated with popular payment terminals and POS systems for enterprise clients, supports mobile payments from most any iOS or Android device and any bank-issued credit or debit card.
