ATLANTA–Sionic Mobile is proud to announce it is making mobile payments at gas pumps possible without requiring a mobile app. Sionic Mobile, a leading provider of cloud-based connected commerce services, is integrating its secure, zero-friction ULink™ service with Gilbarco Veeder-Root’s Passport® Point-of-Sale solution at fuel dispensers.

The integration of ULink into Passport enables fast and convenient payment at all Point-of-Sale manufactured by Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a highly-regarded supplier of fuel dispensers, PoS systems, payment systems, forecourt merchandising, and support services to fuel retailers. ULink, a universal linking service connecting mobile consumers and brick-and-mortar merchants, uses digital wallets and cutting-edge payment card security and payment processing through CyberSource®, a Visa company, to submit card payment authorizations to fuel retailers.

Consumers will receive a message on their mobile device upon arriving at participating gas stations, tap the message, and select a pump to turn on. If the consumer is not enrolled in the fuel retailer’s loyalty program, joining is also as simple as a single tap. No plastic cards, key fobs, or mobile apps are required.

“Consumers crave fast, simple, secure forms of payment. Integrating Sionic Mobile’s ULink service into Passport eliminates steps in the payment process to create a seamless fueling experience. Our products and solutions are designed to help people do business better. With Sionic Mobile, we’re excited to break down technological barriers to simplify and enhance the retail fueling process for all,” said Matthew Packer, Marketing Manager for Passport Partnerships at Gilbarco Veeder-Root.

“We are thrilled to be working with Gilbarco Veeder-Root to bring zero-friction mobile pay at the pump to gas stations large and small,” said Ronald Herman, CEO and founder of Sionic Mobile. “Consumers can turn on the pump with a tap or two on their mobile device without having to download and use yet another app.”

This partnership will empower fuel retailers to enhance the customer experience at the pump and improve their store’s bottom line by helping drive more fuel sales and reduce fraud. It may also positively impact fuel retailers’ marketing and operations by increasing enrollment and participation in loyalty programs while eliminating the expense of offering a mobile app.

Spare Change Donation App Softgiving Launches Rebates App To Donate With Each Purchase

A cold call led Softgiving CEO Matt Pfaltzgraf to a conversation with the head of national partnerships at World Vision, one of the largest relief and advocacy organizations in the world.

World Vision was looking for a non-traditional solution to connect with a younger demographic. Pfaltzgraf sold them on the vision of Softgiving, an Atlanta-based fintech startup that engages current and prospective donors with a micro-donation app that links to a debit or credit card to donate spare change.

With the startup’s help, World Vision put together a targeted campaign, launching this month, geared toward the half a million donors in the World Vision ecosystem.

To prepare to capture the donations from this major campaign and upcoming launches, Pfaltzgraf and his team started working with payments giant First Data to find a better way to capture micro-donations.

“Helping non-profits is the first part of the equation. What’s really important about what we’re doing now, including this new First Data partnership, is that it allows us to branch out into a whole new giving ecosystem that we’re calling ‘consumer philanthropy,’” Pfaltzgraf tells Hypepotamus.

With First Data’s partnership, Softgiving plans to reduce the friction of donations even more by circumventing the need to enter online banking credentials every time the user donates. They’re utilizing First Data’s STAR network, the nation’s largest independent debit network, serving over 150 million customers.

The user will be able to simply enter their card number and link their accounts to their Softgiving profile.

The feature also gives Softgiving the opportunity to partner with over 4,000 financial institutions. On the First Data side, it will drive engagement and card loyalty from a user standpoint, by making charitable contributions that much easier.

“This will be a significant technological advance that we will be performing because most of the other fintech entities like the Mints and the Acorns require OAuth aggregators to do round-ups. We will be the first ones to have direct network relationships, where somebody can sign up just by entering their debit card number,” says Pfaltzgraf.

“They could market directly to their customers as a way to use their debit card to benefit a non-profit they care about through change donations,” he says.

Softgiving will be rolling out these capabilities to all non-profit customers, not just World Vision. That currently includes CARE and Mississippi Public Broadcasting, comprising a total donor base of more than 10 million.

Pfaltzgraf cites their conversion rates as evidence that the spare change donation concept really works. In a recent series of campaigns last month, Softgiving saw their conversion rate climb up to the upper sixties, with a year-over-year retention rate of 90 percent.

The new Donor Rewards app is another piece of the puzzle in “bringing merchants and financial institutions into the giving experience for an individual.” They partnered with Atlanta-based software company Sionic Mobile to launch this app.

Similar to e-commerce reward service Ebates, the user receives 1-10 percent back on purchases from participating merchants like Home Depot, Uber, etc. The app then gives the user the choice to donate all of the reward money, keep it, or split it 50/50.

“This enables our donation solution to be truly for those that don’t think they can afford to give. They could actually make more money back in rewards than their change donation cost them,” says Pfaltzgraf.

That app will be available on Apple and Android devices in the coming weeks.

“We’re casting a wide net where a partnership like First Data enables us to hone in on an individual’s own giving preferences, allow that bank or that merchant to partner directly with them and impact the community in a positive way,” says Pfaltzgraf.

Sionic Mobile Enhances Connected Commerce Platform with Universal Linking

ATLANTA–Sionic Mobile, the leading provider of cloud-based connected commerce and loyalty gateway services, today announced it has enhanced its platform so consumers can interact with their favorite brands featured in their vehicle infotainment screen, mobile wallet or shopping and rewards app with a single account. Prior to universal linking, consumers were required to download food, parking, hotel, store and other mobile apps, store a credit card in each app, then link each account separately.

“We’re not suggesting consumers stop downloading apps for their go-to places,” said Ronald Herman, CEO and founder of Sionic Mobile. “We believe customers having already downloaded a mobile wallet or shopping and rewards app prefer to use those apps — along with in-vehicle marketplace apps — to reorder recent or favorite meals and enjoy curbside pickup or skip-the-line takeout. Either way, retailers win with greater reach and increased sales.”

Once linked, consumers use secure, central payments and loyalty rewards to pay for parking, fuel, food, hotel rooms and other frequent purchases, all within the comfort of their vehicle or preferred mobile app.

“One of the biggest obstacles preventing consumer adoption of mobile wallets and rewards applications is the cumbersome user experience,” continued Herman. “Our latest enhancement will radically change the way consumers interact with their favorite brands. Simplifying the sign-on procedure not only streamlines the process, but also provides a new incentive to use these mobile tools regularly – a shift to must-have, daily reliance to conduct nearly every aspect of their lives from either a mobile device or their connected car.”

About Sionic Mobile
Midtown Atlanta-based Sionic Mobile connects millions of consumers through their vehicle dashboards, digital wallets and favorite mobile apps with brick-and-mortar and online merchants participating in the Mobile Rewards Marketplace – a digital loyalty co-op. Merchants deliver offers, perks and rewards to consumers and accept secure, mobile payments – including app partners’ loyalty currency as cash – at the point of sale. App partners include top-tier digital wallets and loyalty programs in automotive, travel, shopping and finance. The award-winning ION Commerce Engine® (ICE) and GeoSense® iBeacon and geofencing location technology drive more frequent app usage for partners and increase foot traffic and incremental new revenue to merchants. Merchants pay a small marketing fee when customers interact with their brand through vehicle dashboards or pay with their mobile apps. Visit www.SionicMobile.com.

Fintechs push to get out of the shadow of Uber, Amazon

Uber and Amazon aren’t payment processors, banks or card companies. But both companies loom as threats and trendsetters for companies that squarely are in financial technology.

As Uber makes a direct assault on digital payments and Amazon’s no-cashier Go stores proliferate, the two companies have inspired what amounts to a sub industry within the payments technology business.

Executives from four companies—Worldnet co-founder John Clarke, Payrailz CEO Fran Duggan, CardFree CEO Jon Squire, and Sionic Mobile CEO Ron Herman— view Uber and Amazon as drivers of the shift to an “unattended” retail experience that removes human interaction from the process of making a payment.

During a phone roundtable last week, the executives discussed artificial intelligence, blockchain, mobile tech, and the two big elephants in the room.
Uber sets the pace for everyone to follow

Worldnet recently partnered with IDTech to speed authorization to streamline EMV chip card payments, cutting time for the consumer to just over a second. The goal of these “faster EMV” payment features is to make the transaction less of a hassle, and thus less of an effort.

“It’s the ‘Uberization’ of the business that’s the big trend,” said Worldnet’s Clarke.

To be fair, it’s not the same as the nearly seamless Uber experience, where people leave the car without making any effort to pay. But Uber sets the expectation that transactions should be brief to the point of being almost ignored. That’s a huge difference from the drawn-out process of waiting for a chip card that’s been jammed into a reader.

“People don’t want to think about their cell phone or their payment, and they want their transaction to be safe,” Clarke said.

Uber and other ride sharing apps such as Lyft and Grab are taking steps to become more direct competitors to fintechs and payment companies. Grab, which operates mostly in Asia, has made tangible moves to tie its ride hailing app to food ordering and bank partnerships. Uber’s collaborations in the payments business include a Barclays-issued credit card that can be managed via the Uber app; and a tie in with Venmo.

Payrailz is trying to take advantage of this trend by selling technology to banks on a software-as-a-service basis to power bill payment, P2P and other use cases, using artificial intelligence to improve user experience over time.

“It’s all about moving the payment to the background. It has to be sale and secure, but it also has to frictionless,” said Payrailz’s Duggan.

Telenav and Sionic Mobile Forge Alliance to Help Automotive OEMs Deliver Localized In-Car Digital Commerce and Offers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and ATLANTA, Aug. 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Telenav®, Inc. (NASDAQ:TNAV), a leading provider of connected car and location-based services, and Sionic Mobile, a leading provider of cloud-based connected-commerce and loyalty currency gateway services, have entered into a strategic alliance agreement to bring localized in-car digital commerce and offers to drivers. Telenav’s location-based services and mobile-advertising capabilities coupled with Sionic Mobile’s in-vehicle payment and order-ahead technologies, allow automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to bring a relevant, personalized commerce experience into the car to help drivers save time, money and effort on the road. Using the OEM’s vehicle infotainment system, drivers will be able to easily order and pay before picking up their item(s) at the coffee shop, restaurant, gas station, or other retail locations.

Telenav’s connected-car and location-based services will incorporate Sionic Mobile’s ION Commerce Engine® (ICE) and Express Rewards Marketplace™ to deliver commerce, offers and rewards to consumers inside the vehicle in a safe, user-friendly, contextually relevant manner. For example, by leveraging Telenav’s predictive technologies, drivers will be notified of offers and commerce opportunities along their way, with which they can safely interact. Drivers may then pay for the order with their favorite digital wallet. It is even possible for drivers to pay for transactions using their loyalty rewards points at any of Sionic Mobile’s tens of thousands of merchant locations nationwide. This feature is an attractive value proposition for consumers, as an estimated $100-billion worth of such points are going unused, according to a 2017 Bond Loyalty Report.

Additionally, Telenav’s in-car hybrid-navigation solution will seamlessly integrate commerce capabilities within search, routing, mapping, and ETA sharing. This not only lets drivers more easily make purchases from the car, but also allows automotive OEMs to optimize their monetization via in-car commerce, while still offering their brand-unique user experiences to enhance customer loyalty. The companies’ combined technologies will help merchants serve their customers in a much more efficient and friendly manner, as they will know exactly when the customer will arrive to pick up their order and have it ready, eliminating the wait time needed to take orders and make payment. Drivers may also have the added advantage of earning and redeeming OEMs’ loyalty rewards, funded by merchants, during their in-vehicle payment experience.

“Our location-based connected-car advertising platform connects people and brands in a meaningful way,” stated HP Jin, president and CEO, Telenav. “By working with Sionic Mobile, we can help automotive OEMs further enhance their driver experience and at the same time generate new streams of revenue through in-car advertising and commerce. Together with Sionic Mobile, we are committed to providing drivers a safe, easy to use, and engaging experience while on the go.”

This strategic partnership also leverages the technology of Telenav’s Thinknear® division, which delivers location-based mobile advertisements to more than 100-million mobile consumers. Thinknear leverages its existing relationships with hundreds of national and regional brands, delivering an onboard, connected-car commerce and advertising platform. These relationships expand the ability of drivers to transact with their favorite brands and increases the monetization automotive OEMs can generate through this platform.

“Working closely with Telenav, a known global leader in connected car services, we are creating a simple, yet robust consumer experience that, we believe, will help further define the future of digital commerce in the automotive industry,” said Ronald Herman, CEO of Sionic Mobile. “The in-vehicle experience is evolving quickly. Today’s consumers want the same, or even better, convenience from their infotainment systems as they can get on their smartphones.”

Telenav’s alliance with Sionic Mobile strengthens its leadership position in offering automotive OEMs meaningful ways to monetize their infotainment systems through in-car advertising and commerce. This is important, as it allows automotive OEMs the opportunity to offer connected-car services to their customers at an affordable price or at no cost.

ATLANTA — Sionic Mobile, a cloud-based connected commerce provider, today announced it has expanded its Advisory Board with the addition of three new members: veteran airline and travel executive, Jeff Potter; payments entrepreneur, Linda Rossetti and global electronic payments innovator, Joe Cohane.

Potter, founder and CEO of Beskapes, brings more than 30 years of experience in the travel and transportation industry including the former CEO of Frontier Airlines, CEO of Surf Air, CEO of Exclusive Resorts, and various positions with McDonnell Douglas Corporation, Pacific Southwest Airlines, Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines. Under his leadership, Frontier Airlines emerged as one of America’s most successful low-cost carriers.

Rossetti, founder and president of Bluestone Payments, is a well-known payments expert, consulting with payments companies and the investment community on numerous strategic opportunities. Prior to establishing Bluestone, she served as the president of third party relationships and the senior vice president of strategic initiatives for Global Payments (NYSE: GPN) and was a founding executive of NOVA (now Elavon). Throughout her payments career, Rossetti has held various sales and management roles, building organizations to create strategic partnerships with clients including financial institutions, national merchants, independent sales organizations and integrated payments providers.

Cohane, partner at Relevant Payment Consulting, brings more than 32 years of international experience in the Electronic Payment Industry with unique knowledge of both the card issuing and merchant acquiring business lines. He played a key role in the development of three successful start-up companies creating valuations in excess of $2.5 billion and was the founder of Veracity Payment Solutions (Vanco) which was recognized as one of the top 50 merchant acquiring companies in North America. Additionally, he has held senior management positions in global processing firms including Citibank, Global Payments, Elavon, U.S. Bancorp and Vanco Payment Solutions.

“Having a strong and engaged advisory board is paramount to Sionic Mobile’s continued growth,” Herman explained. “Jeff’s proven success in the airline industry will be invaluable, as we expand even further into the hospitality and travel industry. And, of course, payments continue to have a vital role in the evolution of Sionic Mobile’s connected commerce platform. Having the unique industry insight and expertise of two widely respected payments executives like Linda and Joe positions the company for explosive growth and ensures we continue to develop and deploy technology that disrupts the current market. I am proud to welcome our newest Advisory Board members and look forward to working with each of them in the coming weeks and months.”

Potter, Rossetti and Cohane will be advising Sionic Mobile Board members Ronald Herman; William E. Clift (retired), CTO, Cingular Wireless; Bill Lamar, CMO (retired), McDonald’s USA; Robert G. Hisaoka, principal, RRR LLC and Patrick Gahan, principal, Alder Asset Management and co-founder Enduring Hearts.

GM Lets Customers Order Their Morning Coffee With Their Car

DETROIT — Starting today, General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) is rolling out the automotive industry’s first commerce platform for on-demand reservations and purchases of goods and services. With Marketplace, drivers can now order and pay for their favorite coffee — and much more — on the way to work with a simple tap on the dash.

Marketplace allows customers to order food, find the closest gas station to save on fuel, and make dinner reservations on the go. This means Marketplace gives drivers of eligible Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles the opportunity to more safely interact with a growing number of their favorite brands in retail, fuel, hospitality, food, hotel and transportation through the in-vehicle touchscreen.

Marketplace also features a “Shop” section dedicated to offers specific to GM vehicles, for instance purchasing Wi-Fi data, discounts for an oil change or deals on GM accessories. Simple on-screen notifications can identify relevant offers.

“The average American spends 46 minutes per day on the road driving[1]. Leveraging connectivity and our unique data capabilities, we have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back,” said Santiago Chamorro, vice president for Global Connected Customer Experience, GM. “Marketplace is the first of a suite of new personalization features that we will roll out over the next 12 to 18 months to nearly four million U.S. drivers.”

Leveraging the embedded 4G LTE connectivity, GM is adding Marketplace to millions of existing 2017 and 2018 model-year cars, trucks and crossovers that have compatible infotainment systems, with continued rollout to compatible new vehicles. A separate data plan is not required to use Marketplace.

“For most retailers and consumer brands the daily commute is the only time not accessible in a consumers’ day,” said Chamorro. “Marketplace gives merchants the ability to more safely engage with drivers and passengers in a meaningful way that provides true value for our customers.”

Marketplace is designed to be used while driving. It leverages machine learning from real-time interaction data, such as location, time of day and a driver’s established digital relationship with third-party merchants, to offer highly personalized experiences.

Adhering to industry distracted driving guidelines, as well as GM’s strict in-house safety guiding principles, GM designs its in-vehicle systems to minimize manual interactions, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

The first brands accessible through Marketplace include:

  • GM lets customers buy 4G LTE Data packages, extend their OnStar subscription or receive offers for certified service, parts and accessories for their specific vehicle.
  • Starbucks offers another convenient way for customers to order ahead and enjoy their favorite handcrafted beverage or food item. And as part of the Starbucks Rewards™ program, members enjoy more value by earning Rewards towards free food and drink. (Early 2018)
  • Dunkin’ Donuts will help customers start their day off right through an experience that allows DD Perks members to preorder and pay onscreen for their favorite coffee and donut, at their preferred pickup location.
  • Wingstop will allow you to skip the wait by re-ordering your favorites and paying ahead, so you can get home in time for the big game
  • TGI Fridays will let customers schedule a table reservation for them and their closest friends and family when they need a break from the week.
  • Shell will enable the exceptional driver experience, providing ease of payment and savings with INSTANT GOLD STATUS in the Fuel Rewards® program. Customers’ closest Shell station will be identified and station amenities showcased among the largest fuel station network in the U.S., with the ability to pay in-dash coming soon.
  • ExxonMobil will quickly locate Exxon and Mobil fuel stations with details of what they offer, route you there and get you back on the road faster.
  • Priceline.com gives drivers access to hundreds of thousands of hotels and exclusive hotel savings on the go.
  • Parkopedia allows drivers to find, reserve and pay for parking, all at the click of a button.
  • Applebee’s ensures customers are never too far from Eatin’ Good in the Neighborhood whether close to home or miles away with the ability to locate their nearest restaurant, order featured menu items and reorder recent favorites through the convenience of their vehicle’s touchscreen.
  • IHOP makes it easy for guests to enjoy hot, fresh all-day breakfast favorites like fluffy buttermilk pancakes on the go, thanks to safe and secure on-dash ordering and location service capabilities that help search and find the nearest restaurant for pickup.
  • delivery.com empowers the neighborhood economy by enabling customers to order online from their favorite local restaurants, wine and spirits shops, grocery stores and laundry and dry-cleaning providers.

To allow merchants to efficiently and quickly integrate their content as part of the in-vehicle Marketplace ecosystem, General Motors is working with three main platform partners: Xevo (www.xevo.com) in Seattle, Washington; Conversable (www.conversable.com) in Austin, Texas; and Sionic Mobile (www.sionicmobile.com) in Atlanta, Georgia. Merchants interested in Marketplace can contact the above platform partners or email GM at Marketplace@onstar.com.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) has leadership positions in the world’s largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. GM, its subsidiaries and joint venture entities sell vehicles under the Chevrolet, Cadillac, Baojun, Buick, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, and Wuling brands. ATLANTA — Sionic Mobile, a cloud-based connected commerce provider, today announced it has partnered with NorthOut, Inc., a leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technology experiences firm, to enhance its ION Commerce Engine® (ICE) platform with advanced analytics and data-driven dashboards powered by IBM Watson Analytics. Incorporating actionable data including customer spending traits, loyalty, transaction trends and market demographic data, the latest version of the platform will help merchants better engage and connect with millions of consumers through their vehicle dashboards and their favorite mobile apps.

Featuring next-generation AI features and capabilities, the latest release of the ICE platform (available Q1 2018) will provide retailers the tools needed to accelerate business growth, drive organizational efficiency, create better outcomes and deepen customer relationships.

“Retailers and merchants in today’s market are facing fierce competition and for many, especially small businesses, the struggle to simply survive, much less thrive is daunting,” said Eric Healy, CEO, NorthOut. “Most business owners recognize the transformative power of artificial intelligence, but lack the necessary resources or expertise to successfully leverage the technology. Sionic Mobile’s sophisticated, connected commerce engine will disrupt this industry, providing not only a robust mobile payments and loyalty platform, but now also featuring data-driven components providing a clear market advantage.”

Sionic Mobile’s dynamic platform, ICE, powers connected cars, the Mobile Rewards MarketplaceⓇ ,the ION RewardsⓇ consumer app, and is integrated with popular payment terminals and POS systems.

It leverages Sionic Mobile’s proprietary three-digit code checkout process, enabling merchants to accept mobile payments in a matter of minutes with no upfront costs, complex integrations or expensive technology upgrades.

“NorthOut’s unique blend of strategy, modern experience design and cognitive computing skills will be instrumental in taking our ICE platform to the next level,” said Ronald Herman, CEO of Sionic Mobile. “Working with their team, we’ve taken a very complex set of features and delivered them in an intuitive, automated manner that positions any merchant, regardless of size or location, to succeed. Despite the continued hype, most of the platforms touting AI capabilities provide little to no value, providing users with cryptic, often inaccessible data. The enhancements we’ve made to ICE will be a game changer for retailers.”
